Incredible video!
Tornado near a Missouri Golf Course

Golfers at Ozark National Golf Course in Branson, Mo., kept playing as a tornado loomed nearby.

A tornado touched down over Branson, Mo., on Monday, May 13, and nearby golfers caught it on camera. At first the golfers at Ozark National Golf Course watched the tornado as it swirled nearby and decided to get another shot in. As the tornado moved closer, they returned to their golf carts and left to seek shelter.

This was a dangerous decision, but thankfully the golfers were unharmed. If you spot a tornado, on a golf course or any other location, seek shelter in a sturdy building immediately.

There are also other weather hazards to watch out for while on the green. Here's what to watch for:

  • Lightning - Golf is the number one sport for lightning-related fatalities in the U.S. Golf courses are often open and exposed, making golfers susceptible to lightning strikes. It is essential to seek shelter immediately if a thunderstorm is approaching.
  • Flash flooding- Heavy rain can cause more problems than just a waterlogged course. Waters can rise quickly, and flash flooding can impact golf courses. If you see waters rising, "turn around, don't drown" applies to golf carts too.
  • Excessive heat- Hot temperatures can make any outdoor activities dangerous, including golf. Golfers need to watch for heat exhaustion and heat stroke when temperatures rise.
  • High winds- Gusty winds can knock down nearby trees and send debris flying. If winds pick up, it's time to leave the course.
