California Earthquake
M 5.1 quake near San Jose

v

A moderate quake stroke the San Jose area around noon on Tuesday, October 25.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the Magnitude 5.1 earthquake happened at a depth of about 4.25 miles and around 12 miles east of San Jose.

At the moment there have not been any damages or injuries reported. A magnitude 5.1 quake is not likely to cause damage. Lots of people did report feeling the earth shake.

The USGS warns that there could be more aftershocks. Aftershocks would be stronger or weaker than the original M 5.1 quake. According to their forecast, there is a 3 percent chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5, within the next week. There will likely be smaller aftershocks within the next week, with up to 14 magnitude 3 or higher aftershocks. Magnitude 3 and higher aftershocks are large enough to be felt nearby. The number of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a large aftershock can temporarily increase the number of aftershocks.
