Inside Major Hurricane Fiona

Have you ever been inside a Category 4 hurricane at sea? Likely not! But this is what it would look like!

Saildrone, a California-based company teamed up with NOAA and many scientists to deploy several surfboards across the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic in order to understand hurricanes better and collect climate and map the ocean better.

In 2021, the company intercepted Major Hurricane Sam. They captured the first images inside a major category hurricane. Back then, Saildrone Explorer DS 1045 measured winds gusting above 120 mph and 50-foot waves!

The first images from inside a major hurricane were captured by Saildrone in 2021. Inside Major Hurricane Sam.

Fast forward to 2022, and Saildrone Explorer DS 1078 gets inside Fiona and captures incredible images too! Measurements recorded more than 100 mph winds and almost 50-foot waves.

Saildrone has been closely monitoring Fiona since it crossed Montserrat over the weekend and reached category 1 status.

Richard Jenkins, Saildrone founder, and CEO hopes that Saildrones vehicles help the science community get a better understanding of rapid intensification and give coastal residents more time to prepare.
