Must watch video
“There is a gator blocking your door”

Oh, Florida! There are gators everywhere! And often some people encounter them right at their… door.

In Weston, Fla., located about 40 miles northwest of Miami, next to the everglades in South Florida, a gator was at someone's door on Saturday, September 10. Apparently, the gator was lost. But it was very likely the overpopulation in this ever-growing region of South Florida that is keeping the alligators in a constant wandering state.

The city of Weston spans about 26miles. In 2000, had a population of 49,300 people. Fast forward to today and this city has close to 70,000 people. According to statistics by the World Population Review, Weston is growing at a rate of 0.41% per year.

Weston, Fla. is located about 40 miles to the northwest of Miami.

And it is not only about Weston’s growth. Surrounding cities like Sunrise and Pembroke Pines, also adjacent to the Everglades have seen incredible population growth this century. Golf courses have become residential communities and what used to be educational centers are not in full construction and are soon to be home to hundreds of new apartments. No wonder gators are lost.

These amazing (and very scary) creators are truly fascinating. Here are 7 interesting facts about them:

  • Alligators thrive in Bayous, lakes, and canals.
  • On average they can live 50 years in the wild. 60 to 80 years in captivity.
  • They are fast! They can run up to 35 mph.
  • They can weigh more than one thousand pounds.
  • Climate dictates their gender. Warmer temperatures make more males.
  • Their eyes glow in the dark
  • They grow (and lose) over three thousand teeth in their lifetime.
