Powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake

Mexico Guatemala quake

A strong earthquake was reported this Sunday morning near the border of Mexico and Guatemala. Aftershocks are still possible.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake was reported on May 12 at 5:39 a.m. local time near the coast between Mexico and Guatemala. This has been one of the strongest quakes in Guatemala in recent years. It lasted approximately 25 seconds and occurred at a depth of about 12 miles.

People reported feeling the earthquake - but less intense- in several parts of Chiapas and across many parts of southern Guatemala. It was in these regions that some property damage and landslides were also reported. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

The last large earthquake occurred in 1976. It was of 7.5 maginitude in Guatemala, leaving about 23,000 people dead.
