The Atlantic hurricane season remains very quiet. This is the first time since the mid-1960s when modern satellites were first available, that no hurricanes have formed by the autumn equinox.

The main drivers for the lack of hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin is a strong El Niño and abundant Sahara dust streaming off Africa. There have only been six named tropical storms to form this year, well below average.

No hurricanes are on the horizon, and if no hurricanes form this season, this year will join 1907 and 1914 in the no-hurricane record books.

On the flip side, the Pacific has been extra busy. There have been 17 named systems and six hurricanes in the eastern Pacific. The Central Pacific has had four hurricanes, with two of them —Lala and Lowell— impacting Hawaii. Another tropical system could impact Hawaii later this week and this weekend.
