Will you see them?
Northern lights may make an appearance

northern lights

The aurora borealis may be visible across the northern tier of the U.S. tonight after the strongest geomagnetic storm since 2005.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), issued the first Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch on Thursday in 19 years.

The storm will peak on Friday evening, with disruption to electronic equipment possible, and widespread auroras.

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections occurred on May 8th, firing solar particles towards Earth. At least five earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed.

When these particles hit the planet’s atmosphere, a chemical reaction occurs. Creating the bright colors associated with an aurora. While there are reports that the northern lights may be seen as far south as Alabama, the aurora would be faint and on the horizon if able to be viewed. The northern tier of the country will have the best view, weather permitting.
