Notable earthquake
Oregon: 5.8 mag. quake strikes offshore

5.8 magnitude quake struck about 250 miles off the Oregon coast on Wednesday afternoon.

The west coast of the U.S. all the way down to western Mexico has been shaking a bit more than usual lately. On Wednesday afternoon, a 5.8 magnitude quake struck about 240 miles off Yachats, Oregon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there were over 50 quakes recorded in a 24 hour period.

All earthquakes have happened 6 miles below the surface. Most quakes have been light, therefore no damages or injuries have been reported.

Wednesday’s 5.8 quakes also happened about 6 miles below the surface and struck offshore but it was a notably strong quake. Luckily there was only light shaking recorded on land as the ocean limits the shaking over land.

There is no tsunami danger currently. We will continue to monitor this and any other reports shortly.

These shakes are happening in an underground fault known as Blanco Fault, located between the Juan de Fuca and Pacific plates. This fault is much like the San Andreas fault but underwater, therefore it makes it much less dangerous to humans
