Rain and mountain snow expected across the West Coast.

Flood threat
Rain and snow for the West Coast

Rain and snow are on the way for the West Coast today as a system moves east. Up to 2 feet of snow is possible on the highest peaks, with a chance of flooding in central and northern California.

The WeatherRadar shows a system moving east across the western U.S. today, increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms along the West Coast and into parts of the Great Basin. The heaviest rain is expected across coastal northern and central California and the Sierra Nevada foothills, where isolated flooding is possible, including in cities such as San Francisco, Fresno and Sacramento.

Higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada will see a surge of very heavy snowfall, with totals of 1–2 feet or more likely. Other mountain ranges in northern California, including the Cascades and the Great Basin, may also receive snow, though accumulations there should remain relatively light at first.

Showers, storms and mountain snow impact the West Coast today.

By tomorrow, precipitation shifts north into the Pacific Northwest, northern Great Basin and northern Rockies. Rain will fall at lower elevations, while snow continues in the mountains, with heavier totals expected in the northern Rockies through midweek. Some higher valleys may see a rain-snow mix by Wednesday night, but little to no accumulation is expected there.
