Recap: Significant damage in Selma, AL

This is a recap on the severe weather threat in the South. Severe storms may produce damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes. Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists are here to keep you up-to-date.

6:00 p.m. ET update:

Images are coming in from hard-hit Selma, Ala. A destructive, large tornado hit the town devastating buildings, ripping down trees, and knocking down power lines.

The line of destructive storms is moving east and has left more than 48K customers without power in Alabama.

5:00 p.m. ET update:

A new tornado watch has been issued for parts of northeast Georgia and western South Carolina and North Carolina. This watch goes through 10:00 p.m. ET.

4:30 p.m. ET update:

Power outages growing for the state of Georgia. As of 4:30 p.m. ET, more than 66,000 customers are without power. More than 57,000 are without power in Alabama, and more than 28,000 without power in Tennessee.

4:00 p.m. ET update:

Flights are stopped at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport due to the severe weather. Flights will resume once conditions improve.

Significant damage documented in Selma, Ala. More images of this damage are coming in. The tornado threat has moved east into Georgia. As the storms approach I-95 this evening, they are expected to weaken.

3:30 p.m. ET update:

A new Tornado Watch has been issued across western Florida, southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia.

Our WeatherRadar is showing storms approaching the Atlanta area.

3:00 p.m. ET update:

Damage has been reported in Autauga County, Ala., as well. More than 44,000 are without power in Alabama due to these storms. Severe storms have also led to power outages in East Tennessee, where more than 52,000 are currently without power.

2:30 p.m. ET update:

A large and destructive tornado has been observed near Nixburg, Ala. A tornado emergency has been declared for southeastern Coosa northern Tallapoosa Counties.

2:00 p.m. ET update:

There is confirmed tornado damage throughout the city of Selma, Ala. The Selma Country Club has suffered significant damage as have many other structures.

1:30 p.m. ET update:

A large tornado was spotted near Selma, Ala. Check the WeatherRadar before venturing outside. Also make sure your alerts are turned on.

1:00 p.m. ET update:

As we head into the rest of the afternoon, storms will push east into Georgia. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes remain threats into the late afternoon and evening hours.

Latest severe weather outlook

12:30 p.m. ET update:

Tornado damage has been reported in Winston, Sumter, and Hale counties in Alabama. Buildings were damaged in Monroe, Miss., from a possible tornado. So far, no injuries have been reported.

12 p.m. ET update:

Severe storms have been breaking out across the South this morning. Tornado watches extend from southern Alabama into southeastern Tennessee. The threat for all types of severe weather including tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail, will be ongoing into the afternoon.
