Europe is currently experiencing an extraordinary heat wave. Temperature records are being broken from Spain through France to the UK. Compared to the U.S., only the Desert Southwest is hotter today.

Scorching records across the U.S.
June records have been broken across Europe

These record figures have already been recorded:

  • France: 111.7 °F (44.3 °C) in Pissos (south of Bordeaux) – Paris records 105.6 °F (40.9 °C) in June for the first time
  • UK: 97.5 °F (36.4 °C) in Yeovilton, Somerset – a new national record for June
  • UK: 91.9 °F (33.3 °C) in Cardiff - a new record minimum temperature for June

The record-breaking heat wave will continue to move eastwards towards Central Europe over the weekend. Temperatures will rise into the upper 90s in many parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany. In Germany, temperatures could be in the 100 to 105 degree range.

On Sunday, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary could also exceed 100 degrees.

These hot temperatures are rare for Europe and these temperatures are hotter than most places in the U.S. right now. The only places hotter in the U.S. are Death Valley and the Desert Southwest.
