Record Lake Effect Snow Event

An unforgiving lake-effect snow brought heavy snow across the Great Lakes, burying downwind areas of New York and Pennsylvania under feet of snow and stranding motorists on frozen highways. In Ripley, N.Y. semi trucks were stranded in the deep snow.

An incredible multi-day lake effect snow event has smothered cities on the eastern shores of the Great Lakes. With widespread totals of more than 2 feet and more snow on the way, this is one for the record books. The video above shows vehicles stranded in Ripley, N.Y.

With so much snow falling in a short amount of time, travel was significantly impacted. Parts of I-90, from Erie, Penn. to Hamburg, N.Y. were closed due to the snow. I-86 near Erie was also closed due to feet of snow and whiteout conditions.
