Video: Lightning strikes tree

Heart-stopping footage captures lightning striking a tree just outside a home near Tampa, Fla.

As the state with the most lightning strikes in the U.S., Florida is no stranger to electrified storms. On Monday, June 20, 2022, security footage from a home in Ruskin, Fla., shows the moment a tree was hit.

The lightning’s reflection can be seen on the windshield and hood of a parked car. The strike left scorch marks on the ground and along the bark of the tree.

The lesson to learn here is, that while trees can provide some shelter from the rain, it's one of the worst places to stay during a thunderstorm. Read more about lightning safety.
