A storm with lingering threats
Texas thru Louisiana: severe storms

Severe storms will move across Southeastern Texas through Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon through the evening.

Severe storms will impact from eastern Texas to Northern Mississippi. The biggest threat will be damaging winds and large hail. A couple of tornadoes can occur too.

As the next low-pressure system moves over extreme northeastern Texas, it will bring a cold front sweeping over the southern half of the Lone Star State. This system is attached to another low and frontal system that is moving over the lower Ohio River Valley where it will bring heavy rains, ice, and snow.

For parts of the deep South, the severe weather will start in the afternoon and last through the evening. The storms will first arrive across the northern fringe of southeast Texas by 3 p.m. CT and continue to move southeastward through the afternoon and into the evening.

Severe weather safety guidelines

Frequent lightning, damaging winds, large hail, and a tornado risk will increase across northern Louisiana after 1 p.m. CT. The threat continues through the next 12 hours as the storms move southward.

The key factors to look for are temperatures and winds. As soon as the winds shift to the northwest and the temperatures drop the risk for severe storms diminishes.

How to prepare for an ice storm.

Texas’ dangerous roads.

The skies will struggle to clear on Thursday. There will be lots of cloudy skies taking over much of Texas through the Deep South. From Austin, west to Del Rio into southern Texas, there will be the chance for ice and snow all day Thursday. Temperatures will struggle to reach 35 degrees and there will be gusty winds which will make the temperatures feel even colder. Wind chills will be in the upper teens and low 20s.

Check the WeatherRadar Map: Notice how the ice and snow will affect central and southern Texas.

Roads will be slippery throughout the day on Thursday, affecting the morning and evening commute.

Black ice: What is it?

There will still be the chance for ice through Friday morning across South Texas, with some icing accumulations below a tenth of an inch. Traveling will be difficult across southern Texas. Wind chills will be frigid, as low as 20 degrees, and could cause hypothermia if you are not taking the right measures to stay safe.
