More storms next week
Severe risk increases for Plains today

The central and southern Plains are once again under the threat of severe weather today. Another round of widespread severe thunderstorms is expected to return early next week.

Severe weather returns to the central and southern Plains today. This comes on the heels of flooding in east Texas and tornado damage in Hawley, Texas on Thursday. The WeatherRadar shows storms forming in the afternoon across the southern and central Plains and pushing east throughout the evening and nighttime hours.

Damaging winds and hail are the main threats stretching from southern Nebraska into central Texas. However, there is a heightened risk of tornadoes in central Texas, where an enhanced risk of severe storms, a level three out of five of severe weather, extends across the area and includes the city of Abilene.

Friday's severe risk

While a low-end severe threat will linger into the weekend, the atmosphere will ramp up again early next week bringing a classic May setup for severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has already highlighted an area from north-central Texas into parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, western Missouri and southwest Iowa, with 15 and 30 percent chances of strong storms on Monday.

Tuesday's threat area, currently a 15 percent chance of severe storms, extends from the mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys to the ArkLaTex. Wednesday's severe weather risk extends from northern Texas to eastern Oklahoma, northwest Louisiana, Arkansas, southeast Kansas and parts of Missouri.

Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists will be here with the latest updates on the severe weather threat.
