South-central Texas´good chance for wintry mix to end the week, including snow, ice & freezing rain

Winter ... Texas style
Central Texas: Snow, ice, freezing rain

texas winter

There are much colder temperatures arriving in south-central Texas tonight, which combined with a disturbance, will bring a good chance for a wintry mix to affect the region from Thursday through Friday morning. Roads will be dangerous.

The cold front will be sweeping through Texas late tonight and a very cold air mass will settle into place. But this time around, skies won’t clear completely as we have a disturbance coming in from the west which will bring the chance for snow and ice to accumulate. Although it won’t be widespread, there will be a few heavier bands that will allow for some decent snow and ice accumulations. Significant icing potential will stretch from Austin westward to Del Río to southern Texas.

Freezing rain will be a concern for most areas by Friday morning. Make sure to be very careful when leaving your homes early Friday, as there could be slippery walkways.

Those planning to venture outdoors should be prepared for the possibility of ice accumulations on exposed surfaces such as elevated sidewalks, as well as bridges and overpasses.

There could be some icing of less than one-tenth of an inch where the ice bands become more persistent.

If possible, Thursday and Friday will be good days to telecommute or take the days off. Roads will be dangerously slippery and black ice could be an issue across some areas.

Dangerously cold temperatures

As the cold air mass settles in, and the clouds stay on deck, there will hardly be any warming on Thursday through much of Friday. The frigid air combined with strong gusty winds will make the temperatures feel as if they were between 18 and 21 degrees. Brrr!
