Southeast's freeze - Cold front's rain and frigid takeover

Southeast's freeze
Cold front's rain and frigid takeover

The same storm system that created chaos across parts of the Central Plains through the Mid-Atlantic with heavy snow totals and icy conditions will push a cold front across the Southeast. Temperatures will take a plunge and remain cold most of the week.

The cold temperatures have started to take over much of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and the Deep South, where highs could be up to 30 degrees below average for this time of year. Highs won't even reach the freezing mark, and in many cities like Wichita, Kan., and Kansas City Mo., highs will stay in the teens! Brrr!

Texas is also dealing with frigid air that has moved in. Highs in Dallas and Fort Worth will struggle to reach 38 degrees, and Houston will stay in the mid-40s on Monday. Meanwhile, farther east, there are drastic temperature gradients across many states. Atlanta will have afternoon temperatures in the mid-30s, while in Savannah, Ga., on the coast, highs will reach the mid-60s, as the winds will still be from the south-southwest ahead of the cold front.

Coldest in two years!

Last time metro areas of southeast Florida had low temperatures below 50F was in early 2023. Wednesday and Thursday morning temperatures could be colder.

The most significant temperature differences will be across Florida, where highs in South Florida will stay around 80 degrees on Monday, while on Tuesday afternoon, temperatures will struggle to reach the 70s. The cold front will produce showers, and there is a chance for some isolated severe storms across the state's northern half. But there will be drier air filtering as the front moves south, ending the severe threat and allowing much colder air to take over Florida.

The entire Southeast will remain with below-average temperatures all week. There will be a high-pressure system that will continue to move eastward slowly. The gusty winds will gradually subside across the Carolinas and Georgia by the middle of the week. Still, the winds will stay from the north, keeping the temperatures in the upper 40s across much of the Carolinas, Georgia, while northern Florida will stay in the 50s and South Florida in the mid to upper 60s.
