Spring storms return

Winter might be locked in many parts of the northern and eastern U.S. recently, but that isn't stopping the start of late-winter storm season in parts of southern Plains.

Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms will roll across eastern and northern Texas, eastern Oklahoma and Louisiana tonight before rolling across the lower Mississippi Valley and into the South and Southeast early Sunday. The WeatherRadar shows the progression of these storms tonight and Sunday.

The U.S. has the most tornadoes per year. The peak of the season generally runs from April through June, but tornadoes can happen during any time of the year.

Thunderstorms become more prevalent this time of the year as the "shoulder season" for severe storms kicks-off. Although the risk of severe storms aren't nearly as high as the Spring months, warm Gulf moisture streaming north interacting with cold air can produce severe storms, especially closer to the Gulf Coast.
