Stormy Florida Peninsula: Damaging winds, hail & flooding

Stormy Florida Peninsula
Damaging winds, hail & flooding

Severe storms likely for parts of Florida on Monday afternoon.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across the Florida Peninsula as a cold front fizzles and becomes stationary and another one tries to enter the state. Rain will exacerbate the flood threat in some areas.

Showers and a few thunderstorms have built up this Monday morning across much of South Florida as a nearby front and warmth increased instability. Our future WeatherRadar shows how the shower and thunderstorm activity will increase Monday afternoon and make the radar very active across much of the Peninsula as another front enters the state and moves closer to Central Florida.

Most of the activity will affect areas from Jacksonville-Gainesville and southward. But the isolated severe storms will be focused from Central Florida to South Florida, mainly to the east. Some of the strongest thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts and hail.

The pattern mentioned above along with the sea breeze will develop some storms that will hold their place for a while. This setup will aid the flood risk where the storms decide to park. Parts of Miami-Dade have already experienced flooding in low-lying areas and where downpours have been persistent.

Tampa to Orlando through West Palm Beach and Miami could receive over 1.5 inches of rain, but there could be some spots locally where 3 inches are possible. Please avoid flooded areas. Flood waters could be deeper than estimated. Some roads could be flooded with more than 3 inches due to slopes. 6 inches of water could cause your vehicle to stall. Also, avoid walking through flood waters as they are often contaminated and there could be dangerous animals wandering off in them.
