Large hail possible
Strong storms for Rockies, High Plains

Today, the north-central U.S. will experience powerful storms, some of which could bring large hail and damaging winds. A few tornadoes are also possible.

Those in the Rockies and High Plains will want to keep an eye on the WeatherRadar this afternoon and evening as supercells and clusters of strong storms are expected to develop. A low pressure system and cold front will move across this region and meet up with plentiful moisture, sparking powerful storms.

Thursday's severe risk

An enhanced risk, a level three out of five of severe storms, extends across eastern Montana into the High Plains, with a slight risk, a level two out of five, extending south into the Rockies. Cities such as Billings, Mont., and Rapid City, S.D., could see wind gusts upwards of 80 mph, tennis ball or larger-sized hail, and a few tornadoes. Heavy downpours may also lead to flooding.
