Super blue moon
What to know about August's full moon

Super moonSupermoon

August's full moon rises on Monday, but this isn't an ordinary full moon. Here's what to know about the upcoming super blue moon.

This month has already been excellent for skygazers with the Perseids and northern lights visible for many. Next up is the full moon and this isn't an ordinary full moon. Monday's full moon is a rare combination of a supermoon and a blue moon.

First, let's talk about the supermoon aspect. A supermoon occurs when the moon's orbit is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth. During this time, it can appear approximately 14 percent larger and shine 30 percent brighter than when at its farthest point in the orbit, approximately 226,000 miles away.

August's full moon is also a seasonal blue moon. A seasonal blue moon is the third full moon in an astrological season with four full moons, while a monthly blue moon refers to the second of two full moons in the same month.
