Learn about mammatus
These clouds can mean severe weather

If you look up and see lumpy clouds in the sky, it may be a sign that severe storms are approaching. Let's learn why you need to pay attention when lumpy mammatus clouds are in the sky.

Mammatus clouds are lumpy, pouch-like formations hanging from the underside of larger clouds. They are often associated with severe weather, particularly thunderstorms. So if you see mammatus clouds, it's a good idea to open the Weather & Radar app to see if strong storms are forecast for your area.

Mammatus clouds form due to a combination of sinking cold air and ice crystal sublimation, typically on the anvil of thunderstorms.

The WeatherRadar shows the storm that produced the mammatus clouds over Sherman, Texas on May 22, 2025.

While they don't necessarily mean that dangerous weather is imminent, they can indicate the atmospheric conditions that can lead to severe weather, including tornadoes.
