Strong to severe thunderstorms moved through the Florida Peninsula on Sunday, lasting through late Sunday evening. The week started wet, with many lightning strikes hitting parts of Central and Southwest Florida. A cold front is moving through the southern portion of the state this morning and some much-needed changes are coming.

Since Sunday afternoon, parts of South Florida, like Miami Beach, received close to ¾ of an inch of rain with some nearby areas getting close to an inch of rain. In Broward County, recently affected by the flooding, Sunday was also an active day, especially during late Sunday afternoon and evening, with much of the county receiving between half to one inch of rain. Palm Beach County was affected by the strongest storms on Sunday afternoon, with many more severe thunderstorm warnings issued.

On Sunday afternoon, there was wind damage reported across Central Florida. In Micco, a city located about 88 miles southeast of Orlando and just south of Cape Canaveral in Brevard County, a mobile home park suffered extensive damage. There was a tornado warning issued shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado swept through the area damaging over 30 mobile homes. It had maximum winds between 60 and 70 mph and it traveled for about 0.3 of a mile.

This morning Central Florida woke up again to strong storms with lots of lightning. Busy I-4 had multiple crashes this morning, likely caused by slippery roads.

As Central Florida clears later this morning, a few more thunderstorms are developing across South Florida as the cold front pushes through the area through the afternoon. Some of these storms will be strong to severe. Please stay weather aware and have at least three ways of receiving weather alerts.

Our WeatherRadar shows the strongest thunderstorms to be moving Palm Beach and Broward County from noon through about 6 p.m. and Miami-Dade County could get a moderate shower, but the most active weather will be winding down by sunset as the front clears the region.

Cooler temperatures will be experienced across the northern half of Florida. From Tampa to Orlando, highs will struggle to reach 80 and it will feel much drier with the winds coming from the north.

South Florida’s temperatures will stay in the low 80s, mainly due to the clouds and rain, with still muggy conditions. Marine areas will remain rough and dangerous.
