Tropical update
They could develop, but it'll take time

Tropical waves that could develop around Labor Day Weekend.

We continue to monitor three slow-evolving tropical waves out in the Atlantic Basin. The good news is that none of them are a threat for this upcoming Labor Day Weekend.

You must know that all three waves do not pose a risk to land in the next five days. In fact, within the next five days is unlikely that any of them will be named. But once the first full week of September arrives, we could have at least two named systems in the Atlantic.

Track the tropical disturbance in our WeatherRadar

There is a broad area of low pressure a few hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles. It continues to be very disorganized and although conditions may allow this system to gradually develop it will encounter very dry air and slightly higher wind shear that could take its thunderstorms to the northeast.

A freshly emerged tropical wave from Africa also has a medium chance to develop within the next two days. Realistically, it only has a short time to develop and is in the near term. If it doesn’t develop into a tropical system within the next two days, it will become very unlike it will do so as it will be moving toward much cooler waters and it won’t win that battle.

The third tropical wave is over the north Central Atlantic. It also has a medium chance to develop into a tropical system, but this system is traveling eastward, and it will likely develop as a subtropical storm, possibly not being able to intensify much as it is moving over cooler waters.

6 easy steps to take now to be ready for a hurricane

What do we do?

If you live near the coast or even in areas not so close but still at risk of flooding, this is a great time to review your hurricane plans. Check you have all necessary documents are in place and secured in waterproof bags. Have you checked your generator this year? Does it work? If you (or a family member) were to need extra medications, would you know how to get it? Is there anything you can get to know that could save you time if a storm were to threaten your area?
