Tropical update
Two possible spin-up by the weekend

An elongated trough could spin up a brief tropical or subtropical cyclone north of the Caribbean this weekend.

With two potential areas where there could be tropical development in the next 5 days, the tropics could become active by the weekend. But who could be at risk?

The first area we are watching comes as a trough of low pressure. It stretches from the Central Caribbean northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. This area will continue to move north, and it could develop into a subtropical system by the weekend. If it does it will be short-lived as the wind shear is expected to increase and hinder further intensification.

The Caribbean is another area where a tropical system may form this weekend. Currently, there is a 30 percent chance of formation during the next five days. It is important to recognize that the American, GFS, model has been hinting at possible development in the central Caribbean for about a week.

Conditions in this region are still plenty warm to sustain a tropical storm or hurricane. Models have had a wide range of possible trajectories. Without a system with a closed circulation, it is impossible to know how strong and where a system could head. We will be paying close attention to this and bring you prompt updates.
