Storms have been producing lightning and hail this afternoon in central and southern California. Flooded roads and torrential downpours have created messy commutes stretching from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles.

Winds gusting 50 mph are causing power outages and downing trees across central and southern California. The WindRadar shows these powerful gusts which are expected to continue into tonight.

Travel is severely impacted in central and southern California's mountain ranges due to high winds and heavy snow. If you do plan to travel in these locations, snow chains are needed.

Our latest WeatherRadar shows heavy rains falling across the coastal mountains through the Bay Area. There are also thunderstorms just to the east of Bakersfield extending to just east of Porterville. The Sierra is starting to get heavy snow and conditions will quickly start deteriorating.

Strong winds have also expanded and are now affecting much of the state. San Jose and Palo Alto getting winds of 55 mph with higher gusts. Power lines could be downed and power outages could be extensive. Keep those mobile devices charged.

State and local authorities are ready to face the inches of rain and feet of snow that will affect California through Wednesday.

This is the twelfth atmospheric river that affects the West Coast this season. Heavy rain arrived overnight and some spots, like Santa Barbara, have already received nearly 1 inch of rain and the event is just starting.

Another large atmospheric river will be affecting Central and Southern California during the next 24 hours. Expect periods of heavy rains and heavy mountain snow starting Tuesday and continuing through the day on Wednesday. With many places in California still working to heal from the recent floods and trying to bury themselves out of the snow this next atmospheric river could create dangerous conditions rapidly.

The gusts are quickly picking up this morning across much of California, where there are several wind advisories in effect through late Tuesday. Gusts could reach 60 to 70 mph across some locations which could down trees and power lines. Please stay away from any power lines.
