Impressive footage captured in Arizona sees two large dust devils in action. The diminutive tornadoes swept across the landscape on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Dust devils are small and although they look like them, they are not tornadoes. They often form in dry areas over a highly heated and dusty surface when air rises and begins to rotate.

In contrast to tornadoes, dust devils occur in calm and dry weather, without thunderstorm activity. They usually only reach a height of 500 to 1,000 feet and are usually much more harmless than tornadoes.

Tornadoes are in the forecast across the Plains through the first half of the week. See the Task Force Hub for the latest information.
