Video: lightning and freezing rain

Thunderstorms and freezing rain hit parts of Indiana on Wednesday. This interesting weather was caught on camera in Lebanon, Ind.

An ice storm was accompanied by lightning in central Indiana on Wednesday. The video above shows Lebanon, Ind., where ice accumulated on a side mirror while lightning flashed in the sky. While freezing rain and lightning happening at the same time is unique, there's an interesting meteorological explanation.

Freezing rain occurs when there is a warm layer high in the atmosphere and freezing temperatures at the surface. The WeatherRadar shows freezing rain in orange.

On Wednesday night, there was also a narrow corridor of instability high up in the atmosphere where the warm air was located. This instability produced lightning. The freezing temperatures at the surface led to freezing rain and the formation of a layer of ice.
