There was big atmospheric news this past week. El Niño is officially back, and the forecast calls for it to be back with vengeance by the winter. These might leave you with more questions about the hurricane season.

Usually, when an El Niño is present, hurricane season tends to be much less active, but there are other things to consider. This year, water temperatures have remained well above average, and they will likely remain this way for the rest of the year. So what weighs more when speaking about the hurricane season, warm sea surface temperatures, or strong shear over the Atlantic (El Niño)?
