Stromboli continues to rumble

The Stromboli volcano in Italy is still not at rest. On top of further lava emissions and ash clouds, there was a recent landslide.

The Stromboli volcano continues to provide spectacular footage of its eruptions. However, experts no longer assess the situation as completely harmless.

A landslide occurred on Wednesday morning, October 12th. The flank of the volcano is being increasingly eroded by the lava flow sliding towards the sea, with the explosions continuing to hurl shreds of lava into the air. There is also an active lava flow that could overflow.

Pyroclastic flows and lava has been rushing down the sides of the mountain, streaming into the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, consequently triggering huge waves, with the potential for small tsunamis too. A pyroclastic flow is a very hot, deadly and fast-moving mixture of rocks, ash and gas.

The researchers are also observing the development of the eruption with a thermal imaging camera, in order to better understand the behaviour of the volcano. The Stromboli is currently being monitored 24 hours a day.
