Video: Iowa ice storm

An ice storm rolled across eastern Iowa Saturday, producing an icy scene.

More than a half inch of ice was reported in several areas, with Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reporting 0.68 inches of freezing rain.

Freezing rain occurs when rain falls into a shallow, sub-freezing cold air mass at the ground. The rain doesn't have time to refreeze as it descends towards the ground. It will freeze on any surface that is subfreezing.

The WeatherRadar shows these type of situations using the orange color.
