An ice storm rolled across eastern Iowa Saturday, producing an icy scene.

More than a half inch of ice was reported in several areas, with Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reporting 0.68 inches of freezing rain.

Freezing rain occurs when rain falls into a shallow, sub-freezing cold air mass at the ground. The rain doesn't have time to refreeze as it descends towards the ground. It will freeze on any surface that is subfreezing.
