Weekend preview
August starts blazing hot

Triple digit Saturday for the Mountain West.
Triple digit highs for West

August will live up to its blazing hot reputation as 2026's eighth month likely sets new heat records across the Southwest and Mountain West this weekend. Triple digits will reach into the northern Rockies and the Canada border.

The TemperatureRadar shows triple digits extending across many pockets of the Southwest, Great Basin and the northern Rockies. Although places like Phoenix and Las Vegas —with highs in the mid-110s— are used to seeing hot weather like this, it will be a different story much further north.

Triple-digit highs setting new daily temperature records will be found in places like Salt Lake City, southern Idaho and throughout central and northern Montana. Every major population center in the Big Sky Country state, including Billings, Havre, Great Falls, Billings and Helena, could set new daily high records Saturday.

These extremes are 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal for this time of the year. Looking ahead to early next week, the cooler weather will set in north from Canada, bringing a whiplash of low to mid-70s to Montana while the summer heat sweeps across the central Rockies and into the western high Plains.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
