Never too early
Winter prep for you & your family

Winter weather

Wintry weather is not far away for many, even if we aren’t close to the official season shift. As temperatures drop this week, it's time to finalize winter preparations!

The cold and wintry weather is upon us and keeping up with preparations now can save you time, money, and even stress before the first flakes fall. Remember, snow can begin falling in the lower 48 as early as September so it is never too early to get you and your home ready for winter.

Luckily, Weather & Radar will keep you informed before the wintry weather hits so you can be best prepared.

Know the difference

When winter weather hits it can often last hours to several days and can impact communication services as well as cutting off heat and power, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Winter Storm Watch: a blizzard, heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, and/or heavy sleet are possible 12 to 48 hours after watch issuance.
  • Winter Storm Warning: hazardous winter weather such as heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, or heavy sleet is imminent or occurring but is usually issued between 12 and 24 hours prior to the storm.
  • Winter Weather Advisory: issued when accumulating snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and sleet can be dangerous if precautions are not taken and could lead to life-threatening situations.

Prep your home & vehicle

Your home will be your sanctuary when snow and freezing precipitation falls. Check your insulation and add more if needed. Additionally, cold air can seep in through unsealed doorways and windows. Take the time to caulk and add weather stripping to seal these areas to keep your heat indoors.

Should winter weather hit while you are traveling – it happens even when winter storm warnings are issued – make sure you have a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. This includes jumper cables, sand or litter, flashlight, batteries, blanket, non-perishable food, hand warmers, water, and a full tank of gas. If you live in a mountainous region, snow tires and chains are also very helpful.

Know the essentials you use every day and have those stocked and available should you have to stay in for a few days due to winter weather. Candles, matches, and a NOAA weather radio are also great tools to have in the event of a winter storm. Get to know the WeatherRadar too. This will help you track the winter storm up to 3 days in advance!

You will thank yourself later for having creature comforts too like favorite teas, coffee, foods, cozy blankets, etc., when winter weather hits. Keep your pets in mind too! Food, treats, and pet supplies should be added to your shopping list when you hit the stores before a winter storm.
