Daily briefing
Severe storms possible for Great Lakes, Cali's heat

Extreme heat for northern California and the Southwest deserts to end the week, while tropical Gulf moisture continues to feed the thunderstorm chance for the Southeast. All of this, along with today's tropical outlook, is included in the daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

As shown on the WeatherRadar, thunderstorm activity is expected across the Southeast, primarily after the atmosphere receives the day's heating, on Friday afternoon. A bit further north lies the risk of isolated severe storms. A low-pressure system with a cold front will push eastward, exiting the northern Plains. As it moves east, the risk for severe storms ignites. It is expected to reach Chicago and other areas across the Midwest by late afternoon or early evening. The biggest threat with these storms will be damaging winds, hail, and we can't rule out a tornado.

The hot stretch starts across northern California. Temperatures could reach up to 110 degrees across the Valleys, with the heat also impacting the San Joaquin Valley. A high-pressure system builds, and the heat will become even more dangerous and expand over the weekend. Residents and visitors across northern California, the central valleys, and the southern region of Oregon are urged to take safety measures to stay safe from the heat.

Tropical Update

The Atlantic Basin remains quiet likely through the weekend. Remember that in July, there tends to be tropical formations still "closer to home." You must remain vigilant, as storms could still develop and impact land in a shorter amount of time. Tropical waves originate from Africa from late July through the peak of the season in September.
