Breakfast Brief: Milton approaches Fla.; U.S. stays quiet

Breakfast Brief
Milton Departing Fla.; U.S. remains quiet

Milton, after crossing central Florida last night, will continue to bring trouble to the northern and central parts of the state today. The rest of the U.S. will have a repeat of Wednesday, when quiet and sunny weather ruled from coast to coast.

The WeatherRadar shows Milton rolling out of central Florida and into the Atlantic today. Its squalls will become less frequent throughout the day, but onshore flow will generate swells along the central and northern Florida Atlantic Coast. Gusty winds will slow down clean-up progress even as Milton makes its move into the Atlantic.

Milton's landfall

Milton is the fifth hurricane to make landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast in the last 5 years. This would tie 2005 and 2020 as the second most hurricanes Gulf Coast landfalls in a season.

For the rest of the U.S., a weak cold front will bring a few afternoon showers to the northern Rockies while showers linger over parts of New England.

The TemperatureRadar shows another warm October day across the U.S. Highs will be in the 80s throughout the central U.S. and the Mountain West from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. Par for the course, the Southwest, interior and western Texas and interior southern California will be in the 90s and low triple-digits. The East and West coasts will be cooler, with 60s and 70s present.

Thursday's highs.

Tropical update:

The tropical focus remains on Milton. Weakening Hurricane Milton will sweep eastward across the Atlantic Coast and off the Florida Coast. Even so, there will be onshore flow from central Florida's Atlantic Coast northward into southeastern Georgia. The rain squalls will diminish later in the day.

Hurricane Leslie will continue to churn up the central Atlantic Ocean today. Two other systems, one in the western Atlantic and another rolling off the western African coast are being watched, but these will be slow to develop.
