Breakfast Brief: Tropical Atlantic awakens, storms continue

Strong to severe thunderstorms are once again expected for a large portion of the Plains and eastern U.S., while a tropical system in the Atlantic shows promising signs of developing.

A low-pressure system and its attendant warm front will lift north on Wednesday, sparking strong to severe thunderstorms from the Plains through the Ohio and Tennessee Valley. However, the highest severe potential will be across Iowa and surrounding areas, including cities like Omaha, Neb., Des Moines, Iowa, and Sioux Falls, S.D. Heavy rain, with the potential for flash flooding, will affect the greater Midwest area.

An intense summer heat wave will expand this week, bringing widespread temperatures in the upper 90s and low 100s to large portions of the central and southeast U.S. High humidity adds to the heat, making it feel like temperatures soar to 110°F degrees at times. Major metropolitan cities like Oklahoma City, Dallas, New Orleans, and Atlanta are being affected.

A tropical wave, currently located several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, will move into an area more favorable for development as it nears the Caribbean. As of Tuesday evening, the chances of this system developing into a tropical depression had increased to 60%.
