September is off to a record-wet start in Texas: Multiple flood reports

Early September deluge
Record wet start in Texas

A stalled front is bringing persistent clouds and rainfall across the southern United States, particularly in Texas, where many regions are experiencing a record-wet start to September.

Multiple days of moderate to heavy rain have led to widespread flooding across Texas. From nightmare commutes to rivers nearing flood stage, the recent deluge is disrupting daily life and plans across the state.

The WeatherRadar shows slow-moving showers tracking across the DFW Metroplex Wednesday afternoon.

Several cities are recording their wettest start to September on record. For instance, San Angelo, Fort Worth at Carswell, and Midland are all at least three inches above average in rainfall accumulation. San Antonio is also breaking records, running approximately 1.5 inches ahead of normal.

As autumn approaches, stationary fronts become more common in the southern U.S., bringing prolonged periods of rain. Unfortunately, these persistent weather patterns can trigger dangerous flash floods and even contribute to the development of tropical cyclones.
