Soggy Gulf Coast - What's happening with this wet pattern?

Soggy Gulf Coast
What's happening with this wet pattern?

It's that time of year! Along with pumpkin spice everything, the weather world starts to talk more about stationary fronts. These fronts are usually big rainmakers for the South.

This is the exact pattern we are stuck in this week. The same stationary front that affects Texas drapes along the Deep South through southern Georgia and northern Florida. Our WeatherRadar shows above-normal showers that are likely to be present intermittently throughout the day... for several days.

This is typical of spring and fall. It is just during this time of the season that fronts are battling the changes in the atmosphere. During the fall, fronts try to gain more strength, but usually, the east-southeast winds or a high-pressure system closer to the tropics or the Bermuda High get in the way, holding the fronts stationary.

Although severe weather components such as hail and damaging winds are not likely, there is a risk for isolated flash flooding as the front will barely move this week. When looking at the rainfall totals from Tuesday through next Monday evening, the highest amounts will mainly be focused along the Gulf states, from South Texas through the Florida Panhandle. Some spots with up to 10 inches are possible.

Just like at the beginning of hurricane season, we need to monitor any leftover energy these fronts may leave behind, as there could be a quick tropical spin-off. These spin-offs are naturally closer to land and tend to come with little time to prepare, unlike those tropical waves we can watch develop for several days as they travel in the Caribbean or from Africa. Make sure to have your weather alerts and notifications on.
