4.8 M Earthquake rattles Northeast

Shaking was felt across the Tri-State on Friday morning as a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in New Jersey shook residents in surrounding states and New York City.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was just northeast of Lebanon, N.J., which is less than 50 miles west of New York City. The USGS recorded a preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake, making it the strongest to hit New Jersey since 1884.

Earthquake epicenter

The quake was felt in New York City, where residents were encouraged to seek shelter as buildings shook. So far, there are no reports of damage or injuries, but more aftershocks are possible. Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport were at a ground stop shortly after the earthquake so the runways could be inspected for damage.

According to reports, the earthquake was felt throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere across the Northeast. Shaking was even reported as far away as Cambridge, Mass., about 250 miles away from the reported epicenter.
