Daily briefing: More records shattered

A major early-summer heat wave continues unabated today, with more record-high temperatures likely across the East Coast from Atlanta to Maine. The Weather & Radar daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET with the latest U.S. forecast and updated tropical information.

A large high pressure over the East Coast will keep the summer sun blazing throughout the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today. Upper-90s and triple-digit highs, as seen on our TemperatureRadar, will be found from the Deep South northeastward into Maine. Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston are just a few places that will be in the 100s today — all likely new daily records.

Wrapping around the western fringe of the hot air, strong to severe thunderstorms will erupt this afternoon from New Mexico to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. These storms could produce damaging winds and large hail. Watch them develop using the WeatherRadar.

Continuing to the West, a quiet Tuesday is on tap for the Mountain West, Great Basin, Southwest, and West Coast. The immediate Pacific Coast could see pockets of gray and a few showers in the Northwest, but otherwise, it will be bright and sunny today. Temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s across the interior West, with the immediate West Coast being in the 60s and 70s.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the development of a tropical system well east of Bermuda. If a system develops, it will be short-lived and will not affect land. The eastern Pacific is quiet for now.
