Unusual September tornadoes

Numerous tornadoes were reported over the weekend, with nearly two dozen of those reports coming from North Dakota and South Dakota on Sunday. Tornadoes were also reported in Utah.

It was an unusually active weekend for tornadoes. On average, there are about 66 confirmed tornadoes in the United States during the month of September, with the highest tornado activity typically observed across the Southeast.

Over the weekend, nearly two dozen tornadoes were reported in North Dakota and South Dakota, with the majority of those reports coming from North Dakota. Since 1950, only 27 September tornadoes have been reported in North Dakota.

Unusual tornadoes were also spotted in Utah, where two tornadoes were reported on Saturday. Utah experiences only 2 tornadoes on average each year.
