Coastal flooding continues

Higher-than-average tides, combined with onshore winds, continue to cause coastal flooding in vulnerable areas along the East Coast.

Unusually high tides have brought coastal flooding to parts of the East Coast this week. This threat will continue through Friday before ebbing over the weekend.

The culprits for these higher-than-average tides include the moon phase and gusty onshore winds, visible on our WeatherRadar.

The Moon, Sun and Earth are in near alignment, creating very high tides through Friday.

There was also an astronomical factor at play this week. A perigean spring tide, also known as a King Tide, is an exceptionally high tide that occurs when a new or full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth (perigee). This alignment amplifies the gravitational forces of both the Sun and the Moon, resulting in higher high tides and lower low tides than average.
