Severe storms target East Coast

A potent cold front and warm temperatures will bring the risk of severe weather to much of the East Coast, with the Mid-Atlantic at risk for a few strong tornadoes.

The WeatherRadar shows a strong low-pressure system spinning over the Great Lakes. As an intense cold front associated with this system moves eastward, severe storms are possible from Florida to New York throughout today and into tonight. Damaging winds and tornadoes are the main threats today, but hail is also possible.

While the severe weather threat extends across much of the East Coast, the area with the highest chance of severe weather extends across parts of the mid-Atlantic states into the Carolinas.

Cities like Columbia, S.C., Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, D.C., will want to be especially alert this afternoon and evening as the threat of powerful winds and strong, long-lasting tornadoes grows due to daytime heating.

The Mid-Atlantic will see the risk of damaging winds and strong tornadoes this afternoon and evening. The Mid-Atlantic will see the risk of damaging winds and strong tornadoes this afternoon and evening.

Gusty winds and tornadoes are also possible today in cities such as Tallahassee, Fla., Savannah, Ga., Baltimore, and Scranton, Pa.

Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and make sure your Weather & Radar app alerts are on.
