Flash flood risk for parts of Florida

There are at least 14 million people at risk of flash floods on Monday across Florida. Heavy rains could produce at least 7 inches of rain across some spots.

The same low-pressure system that has a chance to develop once it crosses Florida and moves over the Gulf will bring heavy rounds of rain and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday across the Florida Peninsula. The WeatherRadar shows that showers and thunderstorms will move from north to south on Monday, and after the low-pressure system moves through the state early on Tuesday, the winds will shift and will be mainly from the south on Tuesday afternoon.

As the wind shifts, there will be more deep, tropical moisture being pulled north from the Caribbean. There will still be plenty of moisture available, and combined with the day's heating, thunderstorms will develop mainly in the afternoon through early evening. The ground will already be well saturated for Monday, showers and storms, which will make areas from Central to South Florida more prone to flooding.

Keep in mind that South Florida is still under at least a severe drought. When the ground is so dry, it’s very compacted, preventing the rainfall from draining properly. If you encounter floods, please turn around, don’t drown. Remember that 6 inches of water could make a small vehicle stall. 12 inches of water could make a small vehicle float.
