Daily briefing: Double winter storms for Tuesday

The West and Midwest are in for a busy Tuesday as rain, snow and even ice show up in the forecast. Meanwhile, record-breaking temperatures aim for the central U.S. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The Upper Midwest will be waking up to a frozen mix and rain. Minneapolis should watch for slick conditions, while Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee commuters grab umbrellas.

The WeatherRadar shows this storm organizing more throughout the day, reaching the Ohio Valley, Appalachians and the Northeast by the evening commute. Rain could dampen evening plans, and snow and ice are possible in the higher elevations of the Northeast.

Along the storm's corresponding cold front, showers may pop up as far south as Nashville, Atlanta and New Orleans today. Keep an umbrella handy.

The West remains busy with the next storm system impacting the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies with heavy rain and snow. The remains of Monday's storm will bring wet weather to coastal California, specifically to the San Francisco Metro area.

The TemperatureRadar shows highs in the central U.S. reaching into the 50s and 60s as far north as South Dakota, with 70s and 80s spreading throughout the South and down to the Southeast and Florida. Washington, D.C. could even see highs near 60 today.

While the 50s and 60s stay in the Desert Southwest and the immediate West Coast, the colder 30s and 40s will spread throughout the mountain west, the Upper Midwest, the Ohio Valley and the Northeast.
