6th time since December
Icelandic volcano erupts again

On Thursday, a long fissure on the Reykjanes Peninsula erupted with lava, the sixth eruption since December of this year.

The video above shows lava and gasses emerging from a volcanic fissure north of Grindavik, Iceland.

The Icelandic Met Office reported that an “intense earthquake swarm” began in the crater on Thursday evening and rapidly expanded. Approximately 45 minutes later, a fissure opened east of Sylingarfell, and a gas plume about 0.62 miles (1 km) high spread southward.

This is the volcano system’s sixth eruption since December and the ninth since 2021. While the area near the fissure was evacuated, air travel wasn't interrupted, and the eruption did not pose a threat to people.
