A landspout touched down near the St. Lucie River along Florida's Atlantic Coast, crossed the water as a waterspout, and returned to land. In 14 minutes, it traveled more than 2 miles through residential areas of the city.

The tornado first made landfall near the Tarpon Bay Yacht Club, lifting pool structures and damaging roofs. It then crossed the St. Lucie River as a waterspout for five to seven minutes before making landfall again in Bay St. Lucie, where winds of 65 to 75 mph knocked down trees and damaged homes.

The storm moved westward, leaving behind fallen trees, destroyed fences, and damaged swimming pool structures before dissipating. Between 20 and 30 homes were affected along a 2.1-mile stretch.

This type of tornado, known as a ground-tornado, forms from the ground upward rather than descending from a storm cloud, which makes it more difficult to predict.

Weather Radar lets you track the movement of storms near any location in real time. Tornado alerts are available in the app so you can receive notifications instantly.
