A white arc in the sky
Fogbow spotted in the Grampian Mountains

Fog

A fantastically mysterious fogbow was spotted between Corgarff and Gairnshiel, Scotland in the Grampian Mountains in the afternoon of the Winter Solstice, December 21, offering a stark contrast to the bright blue sky behind the white arch.

Also known as a ghost rainbow, fogbows form in a similar way to rainbows as sunlight refracts through water droplets in the sky. The only difference is the size of the water droplets.

In rainbows, the water droplets are bigger, enabling us to see more color refracted through them. In a fogbow, the sun is being refracted through much smaller droplets, so only the white color appears creating the ghostly scene.
