Hurricane Lisa about to make landfall

Lisa became a hurricane early Wednesday morning as it inches closer to Belize. Before landfall Hurricane Lisa could intensify a bit more.

On Wednesday morning, Hurricane Lisa held maximum sustained winds at 75 mph. The hurricane has the chance to gain more strength, possibly increasing its wind speeds to 85 to 90 mph before making landfall at some point during the late afternoon or early evening on Wednesday just south of Belize City.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend 70 miles from Lisa’s center.

Lisa will bring life-threatening storm surge to areas in and north of Belize City. The southern region of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo could also experience life-threatening storm surge.

The hurricane will lose its wind speeds once it moves over water, but the heavy rainfall will continue for parts of southern Mexico. The latest track calls for Lisa to emerge over the southern Gulf of Mexico as a tropical depression and make a loop, which will continue to bring heavy rains to the Mexican states of Tabasco, southern Veracruz, and Campeche throughout the weekend.

Parts of Belize could receive up to 10 inches of rain. The Yucatan Peninsula could receive up to 6 inches of rain. These amounts could trigger life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in areas near higher elevations. Waves will also remain dangerously high.

Martin continues to spin out in the Atlantic

Martin has officially become a hurricane Wednesdya morning, putting us with 7 hurricanes so far this season, which is right on par with the average number. Martin is a massive storm that will churn a big chunk of the northern Atlantic. Check out his winds in our WindRadar

The good news is that Martin will make a long dance across the northern Atlantic during the rest of the week, without affecting land. By Sunday, Martin will likely be a subtropical or extratropical storm and head to the northern portion of the United Kingdom, which will likely cause a big wind event for the region and produce many power outages by the beginning of next week.

What’s next?

There is a broad area of low pressure forming over the Greater Antilles. It is possible that a tropical system may form within the next 5 days. It is too soon to know when exactly and where it could head, but we will continue to monitor and bring you prompt updates.
