Freezing rain threat
Another Pacific storm makes landfall

As low pressure moves onshore in the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, coastal rain, freezing rain, and high-elevation snow will move in and bring significant impacts.

A new winter storm arrives in the Pacific Northwest Tuesday, and a significant icing threat is in the forecast for parts of the region, including the Portland, Ore., metro. The low pressure is visible just off the Pacific Northwest on our WeatherRadar. As this system meets up with the arctic air that's already over the region, a mix of wintry weather will be in play.

While coastal communities will see rain showers, communities that are a bit further inland will experience a significant freezing rain threat. Higher elevations will see heavy snow that will lead to treacherous travel conditions.

Ice storm warnings stretch across northwest Oregon and into southern Washington, where freezing rain is expected to push in Tuesday and into Wednesday. Cities like Eugene and Portland, Ore., could see anywhere from one-tenth to half an inch of ice. Some isolated spots could even pick up three-quarters of an inch of ice.

Snow totals

Snow will spread across the Cascades and northern Rockies Tuesday night into Wednesday. Between 15 and 28 inches of snow are possible as snow showers spread east into eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, Idaho, western Wyoming, and Montana. Gusty winds up to 40 mph may also lead to whiteout conditions, so keep an eye on the WindRadar.

Winter storm warnings are in place in cities like Spokane, Wash., and Great Falls, Mont. Boise, Idaho, is under a winter weather advisory. Travel will be difficult at times, so make sure you are prepared to be on the road and have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle.

After a brief break, another system will push in off the Pacific to close out the workweek. Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists will keep you up-to-date on the latest.
